Abstract

Hoyas (Hoya Sp.: Asclepiadoideae - Apocynaceae) has been utilized as ornamental plant especially in Europe and the USA. The original distribute from the South of India to Samoa, and from South of Japan to the North –East of Australia. Altitudinal distribution from the sea level to about 2000m. According to the thermoecological concept by Van Steenish, altitudinal distribution of plant correlated with the latitudinal distribution regarding with the environmental temperature. The lowland plant prefer to higher temperature and distribute in arround the eqator, while high altitude plant able to adapt in temperate zones. The inventory of high altitude Hoya specieshas been conduct in Java by fl ora exploration during 1996–2011. The species can be utilized as ornamental plant for export trade to Europe and USA. There were eight species of Hoya in high altitude of Java, six of them have wide altitude range distribution, while the two species i.e. H. kuhlii (Blume) Koorders and H. purpureofusca Hook. evolve restricted distribution only at the high altitude of Java/Bali above 1000m. H. wrayi King & Gamble only found once at 1200 m in East Java, but this species has been found in lower altitude in Sumatra. Species which have wide range altitudinal distribution i.e. H. campanulata Blume, H. lacunosa, H. latifolia G. Don, H. lasiantha Korth., H. multifl ora Blume and H. wrayi Kimg & Gamble, able to adapt in wider latitude. The potencial development and conservation aspect described in this paper.

Abstract

Thirty species which belong 18 families and 24 genera were recorded in mangrove areas of Ra’as, Air Tawar and Teluk Semut (Sempu Island, East Java). Twelve which included in IUCN List. The richest species diversity found in Ra’as (23 species) followed by Teluk Semut (17 species) and Fresh water (16 species). The dominant species of those areas were Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Aegiceras corniculatum, Xylocarpus granatum and Excoecaria agallocha.

Abstract

Diadema setosum is an ecologically important sea urchin which is exists on Bama Coast, but there is no report about the presence of D. setosum in Bama Coast yet. This study was done in order to know the habitat type occurs in Bama Coast, the presence status of D. setosum, distribution pattern, the habitat preference and the character of habitat which is preferred by D. setosum in Bama Coast. Quadrate transect method was used to collect the data. Eight line transect was positioned parallel to the shore line. The transect line was 160 m in length and placed 30 m distance between transects. Quadrate plots of 1 × 1 m2 placed 4 m distance from each plotalong the transect. The habitat type was defi ned by estimated the dominant benthic cover of each plot. Measurement of physical and chemical factor of water includes sea water temperature and salinity. The Distribution pattern was determined by Poisson distribution and Chi-square simultaneously, then continued using Green coeffi cient, the habitat preference was analyzed by Chi-square and the character of habitat which is preferred by D. setosum was analyzed by selection index. The result of this study shows that there are fi ve habitat types in Bama Coast, which are sand, rubble, seagrass, live coral and dead coral. The distribution pattern of D. setosumin Bama Coast is clumped and only presence in three habitat types, which are seagrass, live coral and dead coral. Dadema setosum prefers several habitat type, which are dead coral and live coral and the character of habitat which is preferred by D. setosum is hard and solid substratum with simple architecturally structure.

Abstract

Natural wetlands are the natural habitat of waterbirds, but it is very diffi cult to fi nd an unspoiled wetlands without human interventioncurently. East coast of Surabaya is wetlands area in Surabaya that most of the region have change into fi shpond and residental. Theaims of this reasearch are to determine the community structure of waterbirds in each type of wetland utilization and to determine ifthe different type of wetland utilization infl uence the community structure of waterbirds in East Coast of Surabaya. Data were collectedduring August 2012 to January 2013 with point count method. Six sampling plots have been selected. Six sampling plots representingfour types of use of wetlands, which are bozem, the former fi shpond, fi shpond with vegetation, and fi shponds without vegetation (fi shpond1, fi shpond 2 and fi shpond 3). In bozem recorded 19 species of waterbirds (1107 individual), dominated by shorebirds, with a diversityindex (H') 1.86, and evenness index (J') 0.63. In former fi shpond recorded 7 species of water birds (168 individual), dominated by railsand moorhen, with H’ = 1.12 and J’ = 0.57. In fi shpond with vegetation recorded 12 species of water birds (137 individual), dominatedby large wader, with H’ = 1.85 and J’ = 0.74. In fi shpond 1 recorded 18 species of water birds (299 individual), dominated by terns,with H’ = 1.96 and J’ = 0.68. In fi shpond 2 recorded 9 species of water birds (70 individual), dominated by terns, with H’ = 1.73 andJ’ = 0.79. In fi shpond 3 recorded 10 species of water birds (83 individual), dominated by terns, with H’ = 1.84 and J’ = 0.80. Chi-squaretest showed that X2 count is greater than X2 table with α < 0.05, which indicates that there is a signifi cant difference of the numberof individuals of each species and the number of individual of each water birds’ group for each type of use of wetlands, so it can beconcluded that different types of use of wetlands affect water bird community structure in the East Coast Surabaya.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the diversity of cellulolytic bacteria in sugarcane trash (Saccharum offi cinarum L). This study was an explorative research by observing the clear zone in the medium CMC (carboxyl methyl cellulose) with 0.1% congo red. Characterization of cellulolytic bacteria was through by observing the bacterial of colony morphology, cell shape and physiology characteristics. The research datas were analyzed descriptively. From the results of this study, it were obtained six types of isolates that grew well on CMC medium. Based on the characterization of bacteria, six kinds of these isolates belongs to Cellulomonas sp., Cellvibrio sp., Cytophagasp., Micrococcus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. genera.

Abstract

Research has done to investigate the effect of pumpkin seed extract on morphology and motility of the mices after given of 2-ME. Thirty male mices, 56–63 days with 23–27 g weight were used as experimental animals into 5 groups (2 groups is control and 3 groups is treatment), 6 mices each. The fi rst group is K0 which given 0.1 mL aquades by gavage for 40 days each day, and then K1 were given 0.05 mL 2-ME 200 mg/kg by intraperitoneally everyday within 5 days, and continued on the giving of aquadest. The next groups are treated groups which given 2-ME, in the fi rst 5 days, then continued to the givings of pumpkin seed extract by gavage. Cucurbita moschata seed extract were given in three doses: 0.5; 1.0; and 2.0 g/kg BB for 35 days. Sperm collected from cauda epididymis. Parameter of sperm quality are morphology and motility. The result shown that Cucurbita moschata seed extract doses 0.5–1.0 g/kg BB showed no significant effect and then doses 2.0 g/kg BB increased recovery process morphology and motility with signifi cant differences p < 0.05. The conclutions were Cucurbita moschata seed extract increased recovery process morphology and motility of the mices.

Abstract

Ox-LDL deposits in the sub-endothelial easily occur in individuals who have hyperlipidemia accompanied with oxidative stress. The enzyme Lp-PLA2 is an enzyme marker of three proaterogenik conditions, those are hyperlipidemia, oxidative stress and inflammation. Black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.) have antioxidants ingredient that can inhibit lipid peroxidation, and expected to inhibit atherosclerosis through decreased levels of the enzyme Lp-PLA2 and F2-Isp. This study used posttest only control group design using experimental animals Rattus norvegicus Wistar males. The study analysied the number of foam cells, lipid profi le, Lp-PLA2 andF2-Isp plasma levels in hyperlipidemia rats were given extracts of black cumin seeds with 3 different doses (0; 3.6 and 7.2 mg / kg). The results showed that the extract of black cumin seeds can decrease serum levels of Lp-PLA2, tend to reduce the formation of foam cells,but not signifi cant to decreasing levels of F2-Isp. Black cumin seeds extract can decrease cholesterol, TG, LDL and increase HDL in the blood serum. The extract of black cumin seeds is anti atherogenic by reducing the enzyme Lp-PLA2 and improve lipid profi les.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to know the histology of eel ovary, Anguilla bicolor McClelland, at various gonad developmental stage, which caught at Segara Anakan Cilacap. This research was conducted with survey method, there are 69 samples, about 47.1–76.5 cm in length and 143.6–982.5 g in weight. The parameters are gonad weight, histological structure and gonad maturation level. The result show that all of eels is female, which in yellow eel, and presilver stage. As the result, it can be concluded that Anguilla bicolor McClelland which caught at Segara Anakan Cilacap is immature, whereas mature stage of eel is not found.

Abstract

Osmotic regulation and blood hematocrite of nile, Oreochromis sp., have been evaluated as response to different salinity and water temperature. Three different salinities (0 ppt, 10 ppt and 20 ppt) in combination with two different water temperatures (26° C and 30° C) have been applicated in this experiment. Fish with average body weight 28.3 ± 2.62 g were used ini this experiment. The result showed that plasma osmolality of nile in freshwater have not different with in 10 ppt (P > 0.05), but plasma osmolality increased at 20 ppt especially at 8,16 and 24 hours after aclimated on 20 ppt. Osmoregulatory capacity has signifi cant heigher (P < .05) on nile in freshwater than in water with salinity 10 ppt and 20 ppt. Body water content and blood hematocrite were not signifi cant between different salinity and water temperature (P >.05). Conclution, osmotic regulation of nile showed signifi cant different between salinity treatment, but blood hematocrite only changed at 8,and16 hours after nile aclimated on water salinity 20 ppt and body water content not changed at both diferent salinity and water temperature.

Abstract

Porterweed (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl) contain many fl avonoids compound. It is a potential candidate to supress the inflammatory process through down regulation of TNF-α level as a potent pro-infl ammatory cytokine in chronic infl ammation cases. The aim of this research was to improve the effect of Porterweed leaf extract to the TNF-α level and considered the optimum dosage in wistar rats with chronic infl ammation model. Twenty fi ve rats was divided into negative control group, positive control group, and treatment groups with dosage 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg BW. Data obtained through microscopical histologic observation on aortic organafter immunohistochemistry staining and was analyzed descriptively. The result revealed that Porterweed leaf extract is able to inhibit the increasing of TNF-α level. This phytochemical substance is predicted capable of preventing the oxidation reaction progession ofcyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) to produce prostaglandins. The decreasing of prostaglandin level causes a negative feedback to TNF-α production and iniciating the declining level of TNF-α. Thus, the Porterweed leaf extract indicates supress chronic infl ammatory process through down regulation of TNF-α and prostaglandin activity in optimum dose 150 mg/kg bw.
